Uzma Samadani MD PhD is an American neurosurgeon who practices in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System and is President and CEO of US Neurosurgery Associates, a private neurosurgical practice.
She developed an FDA cleared diagnostic for concussion and founded the company Oculogica. She was an early investigator of the use of epidural spinal cord stimulation to treat spinal cord injury.
She is also a neuroscientist whose career has focused on objective classification and treatment of brain and spinal cord injury. She is among the 25 most influential female neurosurgeons on Twitter and ranks 4th on this list for impact factor.
Early life and education
Samadani was born June 23, 1970 in Wimbledon, England and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with double majors in English and Molecular Biology at age 20 in 1991. Samadani obtained her PhD and MD from the University of Illinois in 1997 and 1999 respectively. She completed her internship, residency, and chief residency at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. In May of 2010 she became Board Certified in Neurosurgery. At that time, she was tied for being the 200th woman to achieve Board Certification in Neurosurgery in the United States.
